I was Team Paperback until I tried my first Kindle, and now you can’t take it off my fingers. The Paperwhite is the best. Kindle Product Line And our favorite e-reader Overall. You’ll have to pay an extra $20 to remove lock screen ads, but they don’t interfere with reading if you don’t want to spend the extra money. There are two main versions—this basic Paperwhite and Signature edition (8/10, WIRED recommends), comes with 32GB of storage over 16GB, wireless charging, and auto-adjusting backlighting. There’s also kids version with one case, one year subscription Amazon Kids+and a two-year no-questions-asked replacement warranty. The Paperwhite hasn’t been updated since 2021, and we’re not sure when it will be, but mine still works like it did on day one. We think it’s safe to buy one.
Paperwhite is best for reading. The Scribe (8/10, WIRED recommends), with a 10.2-inch display, designed for write And draw same. It’s a Kindle at heart, so reading is seamless and there’s no lag when writing. Professional artists will want something better, but it feels natural to use. However, the Scribe is expensive and Premium Pen Versionwith an eraser on one end, which costs an additional $30. You can’t write directly on the pages, as the Kindle opts for sticky notes and isn’t waterproof.
Generally, We like Roku streaming device, but if you tend to watch a lot of Amazon Prime content, get the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Anyone can use it, of course, but it clearly promotes Prime content heavily. It has 16 gigabytes of storage, enough for all your streaming apps and games. You can pull up your security camera feed and ask Alexa to do things like order you a pizza.
Amazon has its own tablet lineand in our guide, we specifically advise against buying one unless it’s Prime Day. Fire tablets are mostly bad, but if all you plan to do is watch Amazon content and do basic work tasks like email, they’re pretty capable and surprisingly affordable. The Fire HD 10 is our favorite of the bunch, with a 1080p display and 3 gigabytes of RAM to handle watching videos and browsing multiple tabs. Like the Kindle, you have to pay $15 extra to get rid of lock screen ads. There are 32 and 64GB models.
Amazon’s Echo Show 8 is ours Alexa’s favorite smart displays for generations, and the 2023 version is another winner. It sits perfectly between the small five-inch Show 5 and the large Show 10, offering an attractive screen that’s big enough to easily interact with without taking up too much desk space. You can check the weather, video chat, add up to three informational widgets, and more, all with Alexa at the ready. It’s a bit pricey compared to its original price, but this discount makes the Show 8 really appealing to anyone who wants a smart assistant that can do a little bit of everything. —Ryan Waniata
