Tony Bellew says Joshua draw is bigger than anger, 50-50 is reasonable

Via Charles Brun: Tony Bellew says Anthony Joshua shouldn’t have agreed to fight Tyson Fury in November just because he said so.

Bellew points out that Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) is the one with a bigger draw than Fury, and that he’s coming out of the hard labor camp and an equally tough fight with Oleksandr Usyk on August 20.

There is no reason for Joshua to return to fight in November against WBC heavyweight champion Fury, especially with a score of 60-40.

Bellew said that if it was a 50-50 split, it would be “reasonable” to be able to take it, but it makes no sense otherwise.

Boxing fans think Joshua should be ready to rush back on Fury’s orders and agree to split the purse because he’s undefeated and holds the WBC belt.

What they don’t understand is that the number doesn’t mean who gets the bigger withdrawal. That’s what’s really important in this era, with each division having world titles. It doesn’t matter if you are a champion or not. What matters is who brings the fans.

“AJ is the biggest draw. If you’re going to be rational and say 50/50, it’d be crazy not to accept it,” Tony Bellew told talkSPORT. “But at 60/40, I would hesitate. Because you bring so many terrible things, perhaps even more than the champion himself.

“I do not think. I know he is,” Bellew said when asked if he thinks Joshua is still the man with the biggest draw in heavyweight boxing. “Let’s just look at pay-per-view and purchase sales. Consider the possibility of the market when he enters.

“Why is AJ getting into every fight we want to see? Do you know why? Because he is the one with the most market and the one who attracts the most money. That’s why we all want to see him.

“If AJ announced he was fighting Wilder, do you think anyone would be interested in Fury-Usyk? If these two were to fight on the same night, who would you follow? AJ-Wilder or Fury-Usyk?

“It’s great that Fury has turned his life around, but you’re not the one to pull AJ.

“He is [Joshua] just got out of a tough camp and a tough fight. Does he need it right now just because Tyson said so? Sure is not. Could he not take the chance? Maybe not either. I’m not sure that happens,” Bellew said.
