The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (TIP) today announced the recipients of two of its non-competitive awards, the TIP Mastery of the Year Award and the TIP Young Rider of the Year Award for the year. 2022.
The Thoroughbred of the Year award recognizes a Thoroughbred who has excelled in a non-competitive career, such as equine therapy or police work, and includes a $5,000 grant to the nonprofit horse-related profits or, if there is no organization affiliated with horses, to an equine charity chosen by the Jockey Club.
The breed of the year 2022 is River. Registered with the Jockey Club as a Teen Dancer, River is a 21-year-old mare working as a therapy horse at CORRAL, a non-profit that equips teenage girls in situations high-risk situations through a comprehensive, long-term program of equine therapy and education. River’s primary responsibility is to help young women learn to trust her and stay emotional during the ups and downs of a close relationship. River raced seven times with two wins, a second and a third, winning $7,500.

Riley, who turned 18 in April, owns and hosts George, registered name Mr Pappagiorgio, a 2009 thoroughbred racer who retired from racing in 2012 after four starts. Riley is a TIP ambassador and she will use her award to help cover tuition for her online veterinary technician program at Penn Foster University and to train with George.

Roth said: “I am extremely excited to be recognized as Young Driver of the Year with OTTB ‘Blue’. “It’s been so rewarding to work with him because he’s so talented and has such a big personality. Williams, 18 as of January, owns and rides Troy (House of Troy), a 10-year-old with five starts. Williams plans to use her award to transfer Troy from California to her university in Kentucky.
