Via Dan Ambrose: Ryan Garcia revealed on Saturday that the reason he decided to change coach Eddy Reynoso in favor of Joe Goosen for his next game on April 9 has to do with “time” related.
Ryan said celebrity trainer Reynoso, who also coached Canelo Alvarez, Oscar Valdez and Andy Ruiz Jr. “Very busy.”
With 23-year-old King Ry (21-0, 18 KOs) in need of preparation for the crucial April 9 battle against Emmanuel Tagoe (32-1, 15 KOs), he needed a coach who had the time to coach him for this competition.
This is Ryan’s first bout since his win over Luke Campbell in January 2021, and if he beats 33-year-old Tagoe, he’s likely to challenge the IBF/WBA lightweight champion / WBC Franchise / WBO George Kambosos Jr. for his titles.
It’s not clear how much of an impact Reynoso has had in improving Ryan’s game during his four years as a coach. As we saw with former IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr, he’s looked worse since starting training with Reynoso.
That suggests that Reynoso is not a magic trainer that will automatically turn a fighter into a Canelo clones, what some boxers might naively believe will happen when he takes on the role of their coach.
In Canelo’s case, he learned from observation and from fighting others. That has nothing to do with Reynoso.
The way Canelo improved after his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr, seemingly applying many of the same blows, has nothing to do with Reynoso.
Ryan Garcia says Reynoso is ‘VERY busy’
“Regarding the change of coach. It has nothing to do with bad blood, ego or any difficult feelings. I would say time, basically. Know that you have to go to work and Eddy [Reynoso] very busy and I respect that. He has to do what he has to do,” said Ryan Garcia above social media explains why he changed coach from Eddy Reynoso to Joe Goosen.
“Just move forward, keep honing, and we’ll continue down the path we’re on. We’ll take the world title, all the belts someday, and move on.
“So that’s all we can do. Continue to inspire people and do my best. Mine [surgically repaired right] The hand is back, I’m throwing it full. Everything is great, everything is good now. It will be good.
Emmanuel Tagoe next for Ryan on April 9

“But you can’t look down on a boxer, he’s 32-1,” King Ry said of Tagoe, 33, promoted by Lou DiBella. “He really just lost his professional debut. He’s from Ghana, so he’s fighting for something.
“He always wanted an opportunity like this, and in the end he got it and here we go. It will be a good fight, and there are only two months left. I’m finally back in the ring. Two more months and I’m finally back in the ring. Let’s go!

“If I knock him out in 15 seconds, that’s crazy. That would probably be the fastest knockout I’ve ever had. So I’ll just go in there and throw the first punch and see what happens. Ryan said.
