TikTok rolls out a ‘dislike’ comment button for all users

Now you have a way to show your disapproval of hurtful (or simply pointless) TikTok comments. In the wake of a check this springTikTok has started global implementation for the comment ‘dislike’ button. Like other social networks, you can tap the dislike button to express your dissatisfaction or undo the action if you have a second thought.

The company bills the feature as another way to get feedback on “irrelevant or inappropriate” comments. At best, a comment with a large amount of dislike will alert TikTok to hate speech, spam, or trolling that it might otherwise miss. In turn, that can promote healthier comment sections.

Before you ask: yes, TikTok is aware of the potential for abuse. Like YouTube, TikTok will not show the number of dislikes. A crowd may have less incentive to oppose remarks with which they disagree. TikTok hasn’t said whether it prevents button abuse, but we’ve asked the company for clarification.

This isn’t the only moderation tool TikTok uses, and the combined resources can help the company handle comment sections that often go downhill. With that in mind, it’s unclear how effective the dislike button could pose challenges for TikTok in enforcing its policies. TikTok still has the problem of controlling misinformation, for example. Dislikes can be helpful, but they don’t represent a definite fix.
