Tigers’ Meadows miss rest of season to tackle mental health

Tiger Guardian Austin Meadows take it on Twitter this afternoon to announce that he has left the playground to attend a mental health concern. Manager AJ Hinch told reporters (including Evan Woodbery of MLive.com) that Meadows will not return to the field this year.

“What I have told very few people is that I have… struggled with my mental health in a way that has stretched my time away from the game I love so much,” Meadows wrote in his statement. “I have dealt with this privately with a great team of professionals, but I need to continue to work hard off the pitch to feel mentally healthy.

While I have returned to the club the past few weeks and plan to stay at the club until the end of the season, I am not ready to return to the pitch yet. I am very grateful to my family, teammates and the Tigers organization for supporting me through this. I cannot do this alone and I hope in sharing my experience I can touch at least one person who may be going through their own hardships and encourage them to reach out to someone. for help “.

Meadows has played in 36 MLB games this year, his first in Detroit after an early-April trade from the Rays. He spent some time on the injury list in mid-May battling symptoms of dizziness such as vertigo. He returned in June but quickly returned to the IL due to COVID-19. While trying to recover from that illness, Meadows strained both of his Achilles tendons. He was put into rehab on August 10 but withdrawn a few days later, with the team not disclosing details of his inactivity at the time.

Hinch praised Meadows for making the news of his battle public, saying it was the quarterback’s decision.

“Austin has chosen to be proactive in both helping others and helping himself,” said the manager (via Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen), adds his hope that today’s announcement will help others dealing with similar struggles. MLBTR sends its best wishes to Meadows.
