Three People Killed at Michigan State University, Gunman Dead


Three people were shot dead and five others injured at Michigan State University on Monday night after a gunman opened fire on campus, before shooting himself and taking his own life.

Since then, authorities have identified the shooter as Anthony McRae, 43. Fox 2Detroit.

McRae died early Tuesday morning, just four hours after the shooting began at Berkey Hall – an academic building – before moving to nearby MSU Union, where students often eat and study.

Chris Rozman, interim deputy superintendent of the campus police department, said two people were killed at Berkey and another at MSU Union, while five are in critical condition at Sparrow Hospital.

“This is really a nightmare we’re living in tonight,” Rozman said.

Hundreds of police officers arrived on the East Lansing campus to track down the gunman, who is described as a short black man wearing a jean jacket, red uniform and baseball cap.

McCrae eventually faced authorities off campus before he committed suicide with a “self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Rozman said.

Rozman provided few details about the gunman, but confirmed that the man was not a student or employee and had no connection to the university.

“We don’t know why he came to school to do this tonight. It’s part of our ongoing investigation,” the deputy sheriff continued.

Michigan State has about 50,000 students, of which 19,000 live on campus. All classes, sports and other activities were canceled for 48 hours after the shooting.

WDIV-TV meteorologist Kim Adams, whose daughter attends Michigan State, told viewers that the students were exhausted from the hour-long ordeal.

Aedan Kelley, a senior who lives half a mile from campus, said he locked his doors and covered his windows “just in case” as sirens and helicopters blared around.

“It was all very scary,” Kelley said. “And then all these people texting me asking if I’m okay, it’s overwhelming.”

Monday night’s shooting was the latest in what has become a deadly new year across the country. The Associated Press reports that dozens of people have been killed in mass shootings since January 1, 2023.

And last year saw more than 600 mass shootings in the US, incidents that left at least four people dead or injured, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
