This village in Kerala grows more than 100 varieties of mango

The Indians and their love for mango need no introduction. We find many varieties of mangoes all over India – dashehari, chausa, langra etc to name a few. In fact, each region (or state) has its own variety of mangoes. We recently learned about a village that grows more than 100 varieties of mango. You heard us! Located in the Kannur district of Kerala, the small village in Kannapuram boasts a wide variety of native mango varieties that vary in shape, size, taste and associates. For those who aren’t inverted, Kannapuram has over 200 varieties of native mangoes. And the village – Kuruvakkavu – a small area within Kannapuram, “boasts 102 varieties out of 382 trees, growing on a plot of just 300 square meters (3,230 square feet),” reads an article on the official website. by Atlas Obscura.

The report adds that the cultivation of these 102 varieties of mango is carried out by 20 local families of Kuruvakkavu. If you explore, you will see mangoes as big as coconuts, even as small as gooseberries. Then the mango, sour like tamarind. Noting all these mango varieties and their diversity, the Kerala State Biodiversity Commission declared Kuruvakkavu an Indigenous Mango Heritage Site in July 2020.

Another article in Better India states that Shyju Machathi, the leader of this unique mango drive in Kuruvakkavu, began his journey when a landowner cut down a 200-year-old Vellathan tree that grew extremely sweet mangoes, keeping a taste special mind in the hearts of the villagers. “So we thought about replanting them,” he said. Some popular mango varieties grown in Kuruvkkavu are Kannapuram manga, thenga manga, pulian manga, Kudakkachi Manga, etc.
