Last month, Exeger and Mayht teamed up to create a portable, light-powered Bluetooth speaker. At CES, they gave a glimpse of the prototype.
Swedish company Exeger manufactures , a material that can turn natural and ambient light into electricity. Dutch start-ups Mayht, meanwhile, is behind a kind of audio technology called Heartmotion. It claims to have reinvented the “core of the speaker driver” to allow the speaker to be 10 times more compact than other models without sacrificing sound quality or bass output. Based on Mayht’s drivers require less power than analog audio devices, so a solar cell as the power supply seems to be sufficient for the speaker.
Details on the speaker’s specs are still unclear, such as what percentage of the device’s surface is covered with Powerfoyle material. We’ve seen a number of headphones that use this technology, including Urbanista’s in Los Angeles. Based , the speaker will need a suitable ratio of solar cells to meet Exeger and Mayht’s claim that it has “unlimited battery life” – at least if you don’t live in eternal darkness.
It remains to be seen whether the speakers can deliver clear sound quality. The physical size of the drivers and the depth of the cabinet are key factors in how the speakers produce bass, so it will be intriguing to hear how Mayht makes up for that.
