This new Overwatch 2 map might be bad for Mei but it’s great for us
It’s no secret that the big addition in precaution 2 Part 3 will be a map. Blizzard makes it clear that each season will bring a large chunk of content, alternating between a new hero and a new map. Last season brought Ramattra, so a map is already on the menu for Season 3. In an interview with Blizzard’s development team, however, we discovered some interesting details that were buried. buried in this frozen tundra.
The new regime, dubbed the Antarctic Peninsula, can be found on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, near the southernmost part of South America. Here, precaution 2 Hero Mei, a climatologist, begins to study the effects of global warming on the ice caps.
Since this is console mode we get not one but three separate maps. This style of target capture is the best third round based mode where the goal is to gain control of the target area and keep it until your team score increases to 100%.
We’ll travel to the Ice Breaker ship, which the international alliance of philanthropists Overwatch used when they tried to rescue Mei and her friends from some trouble in the Antarctic ice. As well as the ship itself, there is an underground deck located in the Ice Caves. Then there’s the Laboratory, where Mei and her friends encounter an icy fate. In this regard, “we will now know who they are and what they are doing for Antarctica’s Ecospot,” says lead art designer Dion Rodgers.
Upgrade people, upgrade
Each map will have distinct aspects and details that will work to complement the story and battles. “The terrain layout or geometry is quite different between each point,” says level designer Trey Spisak. Each map will encourage different party composition and hero selection, so get ready for some intense skirmishes.
The Ice Breaker map is very close, thanks to the flat landscape and low ceilings “there’s a lot of protection from flying characters at this particular level,” says Spisak. However, you will encounter large and steep cliffs in Ice Caves. This means that the Dive Squad consists of heroes that can quickly gain altitude and have great mobility, such as D.Va or Genji, is the best choice for this map.
There are also plenty of environmental hazards to be aware of in these dark caves. “There’s a giant drill in the middle with holes scattered around,” says Spisak. This would be great if you’re a Lucio who likes to push enemies into pits or a Roadhog who can use Chain Hooks to pull your opponents off solid ground to drop them into the dark abyss.
However, this final map focuses on the Lab area without a lot of environmental detail or challenging design; instead, it chooses to tell its own story. Rodgers said: “The labs are an extension of Mei’s friends. “Now we can know who they are and what they’re doing.”
unhappy ending
For those who don’t know about the tragedy of Mei’s story or what happened at the Ecopoint Research Station in Antarctica, brace yourselves as it’s not a happy story.
Mei and her colleagues first went to the glaciation station to explore the science of climate and ice degradation. However, what she discovered was much harsher. Attacked by a violent ice storm, the team is trapped in the lab, running out of supplies, each turning to freezing as a last resort. Despite the Overwatch team trying to rescue these scientists, no one was able to get in and out of the station. It was not until Mei woke up after 9 years that she freed herself from the icy grave. Unfortunately, her friends and colleagues were not so lucky.
As you explore each of the three maps, you’ll be able to see the ship that failed to rescue the team of scientists, the caves where Mei and her friends worked, and the safe place. the last vacation of her colleagues. “This map is moving the actual rules of Overwatch forward,” said Rodgers.
I’m glad Blizzard is returning to its long-forgotten lore. Overwatch has featured some excellent storytelling before, and it’s a shame to see this go to waste. Whether this is fortressthe origin of the story, the civil war between the brothers Genji and Hanzo, or even more recently Ramatrathe introduction and revival of one of Overwatch’s main villains, the freedom fighter group Null Sector. The fact that new maps and heroes are now working to advance the overall lore and even individual character stories is interesting to see.
Serious storytelling aside, I can’t wait to zoom around the Antarctic Peninsula and uncover all the secrets about Mei who will save her and maybe even some mirrors. face I don’t know.
