Union Roads and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said work on the first phase of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be completed this year. Through this highway, the government plans to connect Nariman Point in Mumbai with Delhi, making a 12-hour journey. Minister speaking at the inauguration of the Organic Garden at RD and SH National College and SWA College of Science in Mumbai.
The minister also shared the achievements of the Ministry of Transport, saying, “I am heartbroken to learn that the whole country has a resident who is driving a cyclo”. He added that 800,000 of them are driving e-cars today. “400 domestic startups are producing electric motorcycles, electric trailers, etc.”

At the event, the minister also shared details of recycling, eco-friendly initiatives in the country, saying that nothing is wasted and with the right use of technology it can converted from waste into wealth. “For the past 8 years, we have recycled Nagpur wastewater and sold it to the Government of Maharashtra to generate electricity.” He also shared details of similar projects being carried out in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.
In addition, reiterating the importance of green fuels, the Minister said that the Ministry of Road Transport has been conducting agricultural diversification towards the energy and electricity sectors since 2000. “We are producing fuels. Green materials like ethanol from sugar cane are cost-effective, non-polluting and native and thus help reduce fuel imports.”
In a separate development, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in its ambitious national road network project, is expected to undertake work on reducing travel times from Mumbai to Bengaluru down no more than 5 hours. The distance between the business capital of India and the IT capital is 985 km.
