It’s been a good week for screen deals, but many of the ones we’ve reviewed have been pretty expensive, from a 42-inch LG OLED for £779 or one Ultra-wide 34-inch QD-OLED for £943. These are great monitors, don’t get me wrong, but you can spend a fraction of the money and still get a great monitor.
That brings us to the topic of this trading post neatly: the Dell S3422DWG, a 34-inch ultra-wide gaming monitor that sits at the comfortable crossroads of refresh rate and resolution: 3440×1440 and 144Hz . Instead of an expensive OLED display, this one comes with a curved VA panel, which offers excellent contrast, great colors and good motion handling, while costing significantly less: only £351 when you use the code GSGALLMON10 at checkout, down from £390.
In terms of specifications, this monitor from Dell is pretty standard for a super cheap monitor. I recently used a similar monitor, the Huawei MateView GT, and it was a very pleasant set of accessories. The wider aspect ratio makes games immersive and handy for work, the improved refresh rate results in lower input lag, and the whole deal of the display is a step forward larger than your standard 16:9 24 in or 27 in.
You will still encounter some games that don’t support wider aspect ratios, but they are increasingly rare among modern games these days and patches are available for many popular older titles thanks to the efforts of PCGamingWiki and the modding community. YouTube and other video will have black bars on the left and right sides, but the relatively deep blacks here mean they’re not as distracting as you might find with an IPS or TN display.
Overall, this is a great monitor for the money and well worth considering if you want an immersive display rather than a multi-monitor setup. For £335 I don’t think you’ll get much better, but if you have a good alternative – or you just have questions – contact me in the comments.
