Thirty-four Raven Software QA Employees Unified After Weeks of Strike

Nearly three dozen Raven Software employees have agreed to form a union.

Announced in a press release, the union is known as the Game Workers Union and is part of the larger American Media Workers collective. This new union is asking Activision Blizzard, will be acquired by Microsoft at the end of fiscal year 2023to voluntarily recognize the union without hesitation.

“Today, I’m proud to join the majority of my peers in building our Game Workers (CWA) union,” Raven QA II function tester, Becka Aigner, wrote in a Press Release. “In the video game industry, specifically Raven QA, people are passionate about their work and the content they’re creating. We wanted to make sure that the passion from these workers was reflected in the right way. exactly what we do in our workplace and what we do. Our union is how leaders can listen to our collective voice.”

Bloomberg reported that 34 quality assurance inspectors agreed to form a union.

Activision Blizzard told Bloomberg that it is “carefully considering a request for voluntary accreditation from the CWA, which seeks to host about three dozen of the company’s nearly 10,000 employees.”

“While we believe the direct relationship between the company and its team members provides the strongest workforce opportunities, we deeply respect the right of all employees under the law to be make their own decisions about whether or not to join a union,” Activision Blizzard spokesperson told Bloomberg.

Bloomberg also reported that the alliance would be the first at a publicly traded video game publisher, and it’s also the first in Activision Blizzard. This comes just over a month after the first North American video game alliance was recognized at Vodeo Games, as reported by Polygon.

News of this merger in Raven has come just over six weeks since studio fired some members of its QA team. Soon after, dozens of Raven employees went on strike. Activision Blizzard broke its silence on this strike a few weeks laterbut it did not officially recognize the strike.

“Instead of partnering with workers to organize improvements to workplace conditions, Activision Blizzard used surveillance and intimidation tactics, including hiring notorious union vandals, to silence workers. employees,” reads a press release from the union. “However, members of the Game Workers Union (CWA) hope that Activision Blizzard leadership will discuss and formally recognize the union.”

“Our union will help inform what’s best for Activision Blizzard as a company, as a platform for gamers and a workplace where all workers can thrive,” said the controller. Raven QA II functional tester, Erin Hall, said. “The goal of the Game Workers Union (CWA) is to represent what we as industry workers aspire to and to set a new standard for future workers across the industry.”

“The Game Workers Union (CWA) will provide a framework for workers to actively drive real change at the company to ensure working conditions, wages, benefits and transparency. transparency in work without fear of reprisal,” the press release reads.
