Thief steals NYPD’s Kia, crashes while having fun
The New York Police Department (NYPD) recently warned of the TikTok Auto Theft Challenge, which shows how easy it is to steal some Hyundai and Kia models. Ironically, an NYPD-owned Kia Optima sedan was stolen, apparently related to the same social media trend. Not only that, the perpetrator also turned the car around and crashed.
The New York Post reported that a group of four had stolen an unmarked Kia Optima sedan, which was a secret vehicle owned by the NYPD. The report claims that the thieves took the car during a long trip. The vehicle is said to have been fitted with a tracking device that helps authorities track its location. A chase ensued, and the Kia crashed in the Bronx. The vehicle is believed to have crashed into several parked vehicles and a barricade. It also stated that no arrests were made in the incident and that all four thieves fled on foot.

The NYPD issued a warning a few days ago that owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles should use a steering wheel lock and install a switch that disables or disconnects the battery to prevent theft. Apparently, their own undercover officers didn’t notice it, leading to the police car being stolen.
The report claims that authorities believe the theft was inspired by a social media trend, which began in Milwaukee and quickly became a national issue across the United States. The threat has become so viral that earlier this month several groups asked YouTube to remove videos that provide detailed instructions on how to steal cars. These videos are said to have helped the perpetrators steal several vehicles in recent times, leading to an increasing number of thefts.
