Rumors of Counter-Strike 2 have been circulating for so many years that it has become a recurring meme in the player base, almost moving to the level of Half-Life 3’s fantasy. According to Lewis sources, the beta for this new version could be released “this March with April 1 outside.” A recent NVIDIA leak backs up the report, as notable CS:GO leaker Gabe Follower 2 shown that two new executables (csgos2.exe and cs2.exe) have been introduced and appear to be related to the upcoming release before the beta launch.
According to Lewis, the team working on this new version includes “members who oversaw the development of previous versions of the Counter-Strike franchise,” which could explain why some of the CS issues :GO was “virtually unsupervised” for a while.
So what does Counter-Strike 2 actually look like? Lewis sources say a new version is being worked on in Source 2, which will improve matchmaking and will have a tick rate of 128, “making it a good fit for rival titles valuable.” Gabefollower support Lewis claimed for a new version built in Source 2 but disagreed with the rebranding. On Twitter, they stated that “it won’t be Counter-Strike 2, won’t even be a rebrand, but just CS:GO Source 2.” They also add that “your skin is fine, they will be available in [the] new version.”
Regardless of the name, it looks like Counter-Strike fans will be getting a Source 2 upgrade soon unless this is purely an elaborate April Fools joke from Valve. Valve has yet to comment on the situation, but we’ll just have to wait a month before we know for sure.
