Saying that 2022 is Bad Bunny’s year somehow doesn’t quite match his success. His LP “Un Verano Sin Ti” was the most streamed album of the year, breaking multiple records along the way. He is of the year highest grossing touring act — including two sold-out shows at Yankee Stadium. “Un Verano Sin Ti” is the first release made entirely in Spanish nominations for album of the year at the Grammy Awards.
The year was also the culmination of a creative arc that began with wacky Latin traps, skirted pop-punk, and has now reached smooth, historically-minded reggaeton maximalism that puts Bad Bunny at the center. of Latin pop music, or rather moving the center magnetically in his direction.
On this week’s Popcast, a conversation about the historical fusion of Latin pop music that set the stage for Bad Bunny’s success, how he took on social and political causes in both direct and indirectly, and how his success has broadened the possibilities for Spanish-speaking musicians across genres and countries.
