Potholes aren’t just a nuisance; they are a real danger to all road users. While small potholes can cause only minor damage to a vehicle, larger potholes can actually cause a crash and cause serious injury to drivers, passengers, cyclists and drivers. Walker.

In fact, research shows that of the approximately 33,000 traffic deaths each year, a third are related to poor road conditions.

The methods and materials used for road construction and maintenance – including pothole repair – are evolving and diverse, experts report. What works in warmer climates is different than in four-season regions.

In northern climates, most winter pothole repairs are temporary, with permanent repairs occurring during warmer, drier times of the year, pothole.info notes. However, some types of asphalt can allow permanent repair in wet conditions.

There are also brand news solutions for road infrastructure that can help alleviate the pothole problem. For example, Integrated Roadways, a provider of smart infrastructure technology, believes that our routes are about to be overhauled. The company says an estimated 55 million potholes affect our nation’s roads.

The integrated track makes Smart Pavement’s precast concrete sections embedded with digital technology and fiber connectivity, and is designed to be software upgradable. In terms of infrastructure, they last up to 4 times longer than traditional asphalt, and the fact that they’re prefabricated means they’re quicker and easier to replace – potholes and repairs road, according to the company.

While there are several solutions, our road will not be completely repaired overnight. That means now is a good time to remind drivers how to avoid potholes or safely deal with unexpected potholes. Here are five tips to share with your drivers:

Be smart tires. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Under-inflated tires may not have enough resistance to take the impact of hitting a pothole.

Walk slowly. If there are potholes in the road ahead, slow down so you can spot them and drive clearly and have more reaction time in case you hit a pothole.

Leave a good distance following. The tailgate kills your view of the potholes directly ahead. Also, it’s smart to allow extra space in case you or another driver nearby need to make a sudden turn to avoid potholes.

Don’t step on the brake. Experts say it’s best to brake in front of a pothole, but not in it. Doing so will cause more damage as the front of your car will be dented and that will grind the front wheels into potholes. The best way is to simply slow down and cross the potholes.

Hold the steering wheel tightly. When driving through potholes, make sure you have a firm grip on the steering wheel to avoid losing control.
