The US Marines put the F-35B aboard the USS Tripoli for the first time

The US Marine Corps has operated a Lockheed Martin F-35B fighter jet for the first time aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7).

According to a recent service bulletin, an F-35B Lighting II from Marine Strike Fighter Squadron (VMFA) 122 landed on the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) on January 11, marking the first time this ship has landed a new fifth-generation fighter.

Tripoli has been commissioning and training crews to prepare for ongoing flight operations with the VMFA-122, which culminated in the ship’s fixed-wing certification.

“This is what Tripoli was built for,” said Captain Joel Lang, commander of Tripoli. “The crew and support organizations have worked incredibly hard to get us to a point where we can launch and recover the aircraft, overcoming every challenge the Navy has put before them since our departure. into operation. I am extremely proud of what we have achieved.”
Getting the plane on board requires a lot of coordination between Tripoli and the Marines, who operate the fighters.

“It is an honor to assist Tripoli in completing such an important event,” said Major Randy Brazile, landing signal officer from VMFA-225. “The Marines and pilots from VMFA-122 and (Marine Operations Evaluation and Test Squadron) VMX-1 are delighted to see Tripoli achieve its fixed-wing certification.”

Sailors including deck crew have trained their entire careers in flight operations, and they have been productive and safe while completing this important milestone.

“Everything flowed perfectly,” said Paul Salame, 1st Class Mate at Aviation Boatswain. “We did everything that we practiced. I had to launch the first jet from Tripoli; That is a good feeling. We are all excited to do it again. ”

As crew members jostle across the line of vultures or watch the flight action on one of the ship’s screens, the excitement during the commanding process is clearly visible.

“The whole crew sacrificed time away from family and friends to fulfill our mission,” says Lang. “Days like today prove that the time those families gave us were not wasted.”
Tripoli is an American-class amphibious assault ship and was commissioned in July 2020.
