The US and Australian governments are sending a batch of M777 artillery pieces to Ukraine to help the country defend itself against a further Russian invasion.
The M777 155mm light howitzer is a gun used by the US military and is capable of firing 155mm rounds with a range of 30 km. It requires an entire team of highly trained Soldiers to work hand-in-hand to operate the weapon accurately and efficiently. The US has trained more than 300 Ukrainian artillerymen to use US-made M777 howitzers, of which 50 are learning how to maintain howitzers.
The M777 can be combined with the M982 Excalibur GPS-guided bomb and ammunition, allowing for accurate firing at ranges up to 40 km (25 mi). This almost doubles the area covered by one battery to about 1,250 square kilometers (480 sq mi).
