The Treve sisters lead the Haras du Quesnay Dispersal in Arqana

The end of an era will come at the Arqana Livestock Stock Sale, which begins in Deauville on Saturday, with a four-day auction hosting the distribution of shares from the famed Haras du Quesnay nursery of the Head family.

The ranch, which was sold in its entirety earlier this year, has belonged to Heads since it was acquired in 1958 by William, the patriarch of the famous racing family, and his sons, Alec and Peter.

Quesnay was home to a number of influential stallions over the ensuing decades, including those like many champions Lyphard, Highest Honor, and Riverman, as well as other important names such as Anabaa and Bering.

The school has also produced a long list of group 1 winners such as classic scorers Astec, Riverqueen, Harbor, Ma Biche, Silvermine and Matiara, along with the winners of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Bon Mot and Detroit. However, arguably the school’s most famous graduates fall into both categories.

brilliant Treve won six Group 1s under the care of coach Criquette Head, including the 2013 Prix de Diane Longines (G1). She won the first two Arcs later that year with a dramatic defeat first Orfevre before she followed up in 2014 by seeing off Flintshire by a two-length commander.

It is difficult to compare her with her sisters because they were born in different years and by different men but she’s so amazing she’s so busy she’s been out all day She’s the last one to leave Trevise who died taking care of her. She was a wonderful mother.”

Reflecting on the bitterness of dispersal, Head said: “We sold out, you didn’t want to continue so everything had to be over. I have had this problem for a long time. Roland de Chambure, Dad’s friend, passed away and we put everything on the market. Always sad, it’s sad to watch such things go by. We have some good ponies and mares so we’ll see how the market goes. The market in the UK is strong so let’s hope people have some money to spend here!”

“Last year we had a really strong portfolio and the challenge this year is to consolidate those good results,” said Freddy Powell, chief executive officer of Arqana. “Well, it looks like the good results from last year went unnoticed! We have a lot of very good entries and there are some lovely looking horses here. We were also very lucky in form. and European genealogy is still very popular around the world in places like the United States, Australia and Japan.”

Trade proved strong during the previous livestock stock sale at the Goffs and Tattersalls, especially the following December Sale, which netted a staggering 120,587,750gns ($155,363,659). Powell said that ensuring more select services are in the Arqana portfolio instead of elsewhere has taken a lot of work but noted that overall market strength is positive for all parties.

“There’s a bit of competition, but competition is good,” he said. “We’re not racing to be uncompetitive. I think that’s healthy. The market is strong and we believe a lot of people can’t buy in the first two sales, which helps us. “

Selling in the first two sessions starts at 10am local time (9am GMT) and at 11am (10am) on Mondays and Tuesdays.
