The right way to arrange meals in Thali according to tradition


According to the culinary heritage of the Hindus, food should only be served after the user has finished eating. After ordering Thali, start with serving anjaj dishes like rice, roti or other flatbreads in the heart of Thali. Dry food like chips, fruit, dry sabzi/bhaji should be served in the lower right part of the thali along with all curries, gravy in the upper right side of the plate. Even desserts with rasa should be placed on the right side of the plate.

On the top left side of the rice and roti, serve chutney, dahi along with paprika or salad. Also, dishes made with jaggery, achar or desserts like halwa must be served before the rice and roti. Another essential thing to have before rice is lemon and salt.
