What is cyber bullying?
According to the official US government website – stopbullying.gov – “Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place on digital devices such as mobile phones, computers and tablets. Cyberbullying can happen through SMS, Text, and apps, or online on a social network, forum, or game where people can view, engage, or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting or sharing negative, harmful, untrue or malicious content about others. It may include sharing personal or private information about others that causes shame or humiliation. Some acts of cyberbullying cross the line into illegal or criminal behavior. ”
Some of the most common places where cyberbullying occurs include social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Tik Tok. Online forums, chat rooms, and message boards, such as Reddit, are also places where cyberbullying takes place. Apart from this online gaming community, even email and text messages are the means used for cyberbullying.
According to McAfee, across all the countries surveyed, India reports the highest rate of racist online bullying in the world.
This survey – conducted in 10 countries – also uncovered the fact that many children engage in acts of cyberbullying, often not realizing what their behavior is, while parents must struggling to keep up. A total of 11,687 parents and their children completed the survey from 10 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, India, Canada, Japan, Brazil and Mexico.
Indian children also report that children are bullied 1.5 times more online than children in other countries across the fourteen platforms surveyed, from Facebook and Instagram to Snapchat and WhatsApp.
