STOCKHOLM – This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Swedish scientist Svante Paabo for his discoveries about human evolution.
Thomas Perlmann, secretary of the Nobel Committee, announced the winners Monday at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
Paabo has led research that compares the genomes of modern humans and our closest extinct relatives, Neanderthals and Denisovans, showing that there is a mix of species.
The medical awards kick off a week of Nobel Prize announcements. It continues on Tuesday with physics on Wednesday, with chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the economic prize on October 10.
The person who received the medicine last year are David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian for their discoveries about how the human body perceives temperature and touch.
The prize is worth 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly $900,000) in cash and will be awarded on December 10. The money comes from a will of the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. , who died in 1895.
