Audi hasn’t finished the launch yet The idea of self-driving EVs, but its next model may be appealing if you want to get off the asphalt. Companies have disclosure that its fourth Sphere concept will be the Activesphere, an SUV-like machine that promises “maximum changeability” for off-road and off-road travel. Like previous designs, the automaker is introducing an automated eco-friendly interior that can help you relax. We wouldn’t count hands-free when you’re on the road, but Audi is at least moving beyond city-oriented prototypes.
The full launch of the Activesphere is expected in early 2023. Audi has started its campaign by revealing Skysphere roadster in August 2021 and quickly followed it with Grandsphere sedan (September 2021) and Urbansphere SUV (April this year). As a rule, they’re centered around lounge-like cabins and ambitious performance. For example, the Grandsphere and Urbansphere boast a claimed 466-mile range.
The question, as you might have guessed, is whether the Activesphere and any of its predecessors will directly affect future Audi EVs. Right now, the brand’s electric product line revolves around more conventional (if very fast) Cosmetics. Fully self-driving vehicles may also have to wait as many countries only allow limited maximum autonomy. However, Audi expects its new cars to be EV-only starting in 2026, and it’s hard to imagine the company skipping driverless cars when its rival Mercedes already offers a degree of autonomy 3.
