Volvo EX90 will be sold with Dip into the mixture variations of current XC90Auto Express understands and will be announced on November 9, ahead of the start of sales in 2023.

Our exclusive images show what the new car – based on Volvo’s latest SPA2 platform – could look like when it finally breaks the envelope later this year, with an evolutionary design language give Large SUV.

The EX90 will feature a variety of technologies to protect pedestrians, cyclists and other road users, as well as occupants. According to Joachim de Verdier, head of Safety Vehicle Automation at Volvo, “We believe the EX90 is the safest Volvo car ever on the road.

“We are combining our understanding of the external environment with our more detailed understanding of driver attention. When all our safety systems, sensors, software, and computing power come together, they create a protective shield around you – and you won’t even know it’s there. until you need it”.

Systems offered on the EX90 include a new LIDAR (light detection and range) setup, which uses scanning laser light to detect objects ahead. Volvo claims the technology can ‘see’ a stray tire on the road up to 120 meters ahead, while it can detect pedestrians up to 250 meters ahead.

The system operates at high speeds as well as in daylight and at night, unlike camera-based systems, so the level of protection is the same regardless of driving conditions. Using LIDAR, Volvo claims crashes with serious consequences can be reduced by up to 20%, with overall collision avoidance improved by 9%.

The EX90’s system comes with 5 radars, 8 cameras and 16 ultrasonic sensors. The latter includes parking sensors, while much of the other tech will still be used for pedestrian detection and lane-keeping assist, plus convenience features, such as pulse view. around when parking and semi-automatic adaptive cruise control.

The EX90 will also be equipped with a variety of interior safety technologies, including a driver understanding system that has two cameras trained on the driver to gauge their concentration and attention span.

This technology observes the driver’s view pattern. Volvo believes a driver can focus too much on the road ahead and lose cognitive focus, focusing on their thoughts and not the driving task. But paying too little attention to the road indicates that they are visually distracted, likely by a cell phone or other device.

Combined with a capacitive steering wheel sensor that knows when the driver is gripping the wheel, gaze monitoring technology tries to build a data bank of driver behavior and intervenes in a variety of ways. when necessary.

Expect more details on the EX90’s powertrain and technology to be offered in a trickle before the car’s reveal in seven weeks’ time.
