Persona 5: The Ghost of X is a new version of the series designed for the Chinese smartphone market. And while it features familiar environments and characters, one of them is suspiciously absent: Sojiro Sakura, Joker’s coffee-making friend.
We’ve seen that the mobile game will feature both new and old characters, including Phantom Thieves, as well as a new cast of characters. However, while Cafe Leblanc is a location in The Phantom X, a screenshot posted to the Persona subreddit shows that it is run by an unidentified woman, not Sojiro. It’s an odd choice, to say the least.
As some fans debated the topic, Sojiro told Joker in Persona 5 that he wanted to sell the store and do something else. However, this could also be a hint that the spinoff takes place in an alternate timeline, a type of story that has been used in the previous series.
It’s worth noting that The Phantom X is currently only available in Chinese and it’s still in beta, so things could change. That said, it’s an interesting pick that has fans raving and we’ll have to see how it plays out in the end.
