The new interior of the new Renault Austral SUV 2022 has been revealed before the launch


Renault is getting ready for the launch of the new Austral SUV. It will go on sale in Europe and the UK later this year to replace the Kadjarand these new official images give us our first look at the interior of the production car.

Unlike the company’s previous interior trailers, these images are snapshots rather than computer renderings. Therefore, they provide a more detailed view of the materials Renault will use in the SUV’s cabin, as well as an overview of Austral’s unusual center console.

The dashboard has faux wood trim and wide vents that extend the width of the passenger seat. There’s also an ambient lighting system with light bars running across the top of the dashboard and around key trim details like the door handles.

The images also provide a closer look at the SUV’s modular center console, which Renault says is “inspired by the world of aircraft and fine watchmaking”. It features a sliding armrest that can be pushed forward and back to reveal a wireless smartphone charger or a large container with cup holders.

Renault’s recent renders allowed us to piece together the rest of the Austral’s cabin design. On the tech front, there will be a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster connected to a vertical 12-inch infotainment system.

The brand’s engineers refer to the new infotainment layout as “OpenR”, and Renault says it is one of the “biggest breakthroughs in in-vehicle technology in the past few years”. The system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – and it even includes built-in Google search functionality and pre-installed support for Google Maps.

Renault has tried to make the most of the available space in the Austral’s cabin. For example, the bodywork is designed without a central hump at the rear. That means the floor is flat, which improves legroom for passengers in the middle seat. The rear bench can also slide back and forth to prioritize boot space or rear legroom as required. The seat can be fully folded down at the push of a button in the trunk.

Agneta Dahlgren, Renault Design Project Manager, said: “When we created the Austral’s passenger compartment, three repeating themes were space awareness, edgy design and a sense of protection – and all All of that is based on high quality standards.”

New Renault Austral 2022: prototyping and development

Renault recently confirmed that Austral is going through the final stages of its development program, with the company’s engineers focused on fine-tuning its engine range. As part of the announcement, the company also released a few official “spy photos” to preview the styling of the vehicle.

“Development is being completed with final tests on the new CMF-CD3 platform and all-electric engine options,” a spokesman said. However, in a rather unpleasant contradiction, Renault has confirmed that this statement refers to an all-electric product line of E-Tech hybrid and hybrid vehicles, not a full EV version.

Between now and launch of Austral, a fleet of around 100 test vehicles and a fleet of 900 drivers will conduct “confirmation runs” that will cover a combined total of 600,000 km (about 373,000 miles) on open road. The brand’s development program will then see prototypes cover an additional 1.4 million kilometers (870,000 miles) around the test tracks.

New Renault Austral 2022: design and styling

Meanwhile, the rear of the prototype features a large version of Renault’s recently redesigned retro-inspired 2D badging in the center of the tailgate. Other details include sharply sloping rear windows, slim taillights and a classy lower bumper.
