The Morning After: New York City’s Airbnb listings may outnumber condos

Airbnb makes the news for good and bad reasons. When it doesn’t service expansion to make it easier to stay between multiple facilities on the same trip, its safety team (and terrible lessors) are becoming the subject of a documentary series.

Now, according to a report from Limit, April 2022 apartment rental inventory in Manhattan, Brooklyn and northwest Queens is 7,699 units. That compares with between 10,000 and 20,000 whole apartment or whole house Airbnb listings across NYC, according to calculations by AirDNA and Inside Airbnb.

New York City banned short-term rentals (less than 30 days) in multi-unit buildings without an owner since 2011, even advertised such listings in 2016. The report did not determine whether the Airbnb service providers followed these guidelines.

Airbnb isn’t just causing housing shortages in NYC – a problem seen in most ‘desirable’ cities around the world. In New York, rents are rising and permits for new apartments are down “by a double-digit percentage,” an Airbnb spokesperson said.

However, the optics of having more Airbnb listings than apartments for rent is not good.

NASA’s Mars InSight lander will soon no longer be able to send back data and images. It is slowly losing power for a while as dust continues to accumulate on its solar panels. Darker skies than expected over the next few months – also due to more dust in the air – won’t help either.

The space agency believes the lander will not be able to maintain its seismometer by the end of summer.

She resigned from the board of directors and DHS today (May 18). Far-right influencers and media outlets have portrayed the board as a tool of censorship and villainy for Jankowicz. The campaigns have led to harassment and threats against board leadership.
