Netflix is forming its own in-house game studio and plans to not rely solely on third-party developers to augment its game portfolio. The Helsinki, Finland-based studio plans to make “world-class” original games without ads or in-app purchases.
Netflix’s move into the game sector has involved the purchase of many developers, including creators Oxenfree, Night Studio. Over the past 12 months or so, the company has delivered several critically acclaimed titles, including Into the Breach and Pointy. But it didn’t build a developer from scratch. Until now.
When it comes to original games, however, Netflix says we won’t see the first fruit of this in-house studio in “years.” Meanwhile, UsTwo’s Destapremieres later today exclusively on Netflix, is the latest addition from the makers of Monument Valley.
