U.S. Capitol Police are investigating after a man was reportedly arrested at the Capitol Visitor Center with a torch and flare gun.

According to WUSA9The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5. At a press conference, USCP Director Thomas Manger reportedly explained that a man entered the visitor center before being directed by security guide his belongings through the checkpoint. Of note, Director Manger noted that the man was a white male.
“He stood there for a few seconds and then placed the items on the conveyor belt. As soon as his jacket and backpack passed through the screening area, US Capitol Police officers saw what appeared to be a gun as well as two bottles,” Chief Manger explained. .
As officers stood near the man, they smelled a “faint odor of gasoline.” Later, when the man’s belongings were removed from his belt, the smell became even stronger.

According to the source, the man told officers he had documents he wanted to hand over to Congress. Additionally, although the man reportedly smelled of gasoline, “it appeared he did not water himself.”
Finally, Director Manger is said to have asserted that “there is currently no indication” that this man’s actions “have anything to do with the election.” NBC Washington reports that the man is a 28-year-old man from Michigan and police have not yet released his name.

A man set himself on fire outside the courthouse in April
Currently, the intentions of the individual currently detained in the capital remain unclear.
