The latest episode of HBO’s The Last of Us is said to have been censored for some of the show’s audience, a move that has yet to be explained by those involved in the series. This post contains major spoilers for The Last of Us.
Episode seven of The Last of Us, titled “Left Behind,” adapts the game’s expansion of the same name and tells the story of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Riley (Storm Reid) before the events of the show. main. It’s another powerful episode, culminating in a kiss between Ellie and Riley. However, viewers in some areas didn’t seem to see that smile. Social media reports suggested that the kiss was edited for the show’s local streaming partner, OSN+, in the MNEA region.
OSN+ was previously criticized for cutting out gay romance scenes in How To Get Away With Murder and House of the Dragon. As others have pointed out, this latest instance of censorship is strange in part because the previous episode of The Last of Us, “Long Long Time”, was reportedly unedited on OSN+. That episode almost exclusively focuses on the gay romance between Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett).

In a behind-the-scenes video (see above), writer Neil Druckmann said the kiss between Ellie and Riley was an important storytelling moment. “Ellie got her first love experience. First kiss. And then we stole it from her,” Druckmann said of the chaos and sadness that followed their first kiss.
