On December 22, premium electric car company Polestar announced the release of a web browser for Polestar 2. The company says the move comes as a call to fulfill one of the top wishes from Polestar owners – includes a comprehensive web browser for use as a possible browser on mobile devices. It is the first browser available for the Android Automotive operating system.

The app was developed by the Vivaldi team in Norway and features an 11-inch central display with tabbed browsing, streaming, online shopping, and top-notch security measures. The browser includes a built-in ad blocker, privacy-friendly translation engine, note-taking functionality, tracking protection, and encrypted sync functionality.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, said: “It is great that we were able to fulfill the desire of the owner community for a browser with Vivaldi as a Christmas gift,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO. Polestar executive, said. “Now there’s a whole new world of web content you can explore in Polestar 2 – even some of your favorite streaming platforms.”

Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, CEO of Vivaldi, added: “We are really proud to present our browser to a car for the first time and specifically with a brand like Polestar. “Our technology and sustainability ambitions are a great fit. We value transparency, privacy, and responsible innovation – including our hosting in Iceland, one of Polestar’s newest markets. Like Polestar, we are a challenger brand and we adopt a Scandinavian design approach, based on trust and listening to our users. ”

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Tesla said it added console mounted video games for its cars, can be played while the vehicle is running.

Is this just the beginning of a new era of in-vehicle technology and infotainment?

It also raises the question: Are these features secure?

NHTSA is Tesla investigation to this very question, while Polestar’s announcement included this fine print:

… Cannot download files and can only use the browser when parked. For safety’s sake, streaming will continue with audio only, if driving begins. Integrated voice control is being explored for a future release. Private browsing data is not stored by the vehicle. When signed in to a Vivaldi account, browsing data can be shared between other devices signed in to the same account. This data is not shared with Polestar.

The Vivaldi browser for Polestar 2 is currently available in all European, North American and Asia Pacific markets.
