The IBF recommended Andy Ruiz Jr. and Murat Gassiev eliminated the title against Hrgovic

Via Jim Calfa: Andy Ruiz Jr and Murat Gassiev have been asked by the IBF to take part in a heavyweight match against Filip Hrgovic to determine the champion mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk. It is believed that Gassiev could have entered the war if he had not been injured.

The IBF got lucky trying to find an opponent to face the undefeated Croatian Hrgovic (14-0, 12 KOs). It took too long to find someone ready to take on Hrgovic.

Dan Rafael is reporting the news that the International Boxing Federation is recommending a title disqualification for former IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion ‘Terminator’ Ruiz (34-2, 22 KOs) and former heavyweight champion heavy IBF/WBA Gassiev (28-1, 21 KOs).

It was assumed that 32-year-old Ruiz would have immediately turned down his intention to fight dangerous 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Hrgovic because it was a risky fight and he didn’t need to fight in the eliminations. title for him to get another hit at a world ministry.

After gaining weight following a rematch loss to Anthony Joshua in 2019, Ruiz fought once, struggling to beat 40-year-old Chris Arreola last May.

With the new coach, Eddy Reynoso, the slimmer Ruiz knocked out by Arreola in the second round, and forced into the decision in the unimpressive 12th round.

There are some boxing fans who believe that Ruiz’s resistance to punches is not the same due to the fact that he has had to go through the process of losing so much weight.

Ruiz made a lot of money in his two bouts with Joshua, and his popularity was high in the US despite his underperformance against Arreola and in the rematch against AJ. He’s not going to blow that away by fighting Hrgovic and potentially getting knocked down.

The growing list of heavyweights the IBF has attempted to face Hrgovic in their title elimination:

  • Tony Yoka
  • Luis ‘King Kong’ Ortiz
  • Joseph Parker

Assuming that neither Gassiev nor Ruiz intends to take on Hrgovic in the IBF’s title elimination, next in the ranking of sanctioning bodies:

12. Demsey McKean
13. Zhang Zhilei
14. Hughie Fury
15. Martin Bakole

Yoka and Bakole are under contract to fight, so it’s safe to say he’s not a viable option for the IBF to claim to face Hrgovic.

Either way, the post-IBF winner won’t win a title in 2022, as current champ Oleksandr Usyk will face Joshua or Tyson Fury next.

Depending on whether Joshua agrees to set the deal aside, winner Fury-Usyk will face him next. That leaves the winner of the IBF title elimination to wait until 2023 before they get their final world title.
