Jos Buttler and Andre Russell were both on fire with the bat as Manchester Originals set The Hundred’s third-highest total to date in Thursday’s dominant win over Southern Brave.

Buttler hit 68 of 42 balls to make a big inning for the Originals, which included five six-balls with opener Phil Salt, scoring 38 runs.

After Wayne Madsen went only nine times, Russell then cleared 11 touchlines and made a total of 64 hits of just 23 balls to set a colossal 189 goal for Brave.

In fact, they were never the same and were beaten in 120 runs as Paul Walter claimed a hat-trick while Tristan Stubbs and Matt Parkinson each had a pair.

Brave picked up just one win in their opening five games after a disappointing loss at home, which ended their chances of defending their title.

Brave openers Quinton De Kock and James Vince shared speed for 36 of 17 balls, before Sean Abbott knocked Vince down with a stunning one-handed return.

Marcus Stoinis didn’t last long in his final game for Brave, sweeping straight to square foot with Tom Hartley.

Tristan Stubbs knocked out Alex Davies and required De Kock’s key hit three balls later to effectively end Brave’s chances.

Russell continued his stellar performance by eliminating the in-form Tim David and James Fuller dribbling the first ball for Walter as Brave failed well, even though George Garton was 25.

Matt Parkinson ended the match by confusing Michael Hogan when Brave was thrown out with 16 spare balls.

The Originals, with just one win in its opening four, had previously had a slow start to the pace of Garton and Michael Hogan.

But the match exploded in Dan Moriarty’s first set on his Brave debut. Phil Salt thrashed Surrey in two innings, both sides providing a tough chance for Fuller.

Buttler was not to be outdone, boldly knocking out Hogan, 41 years old for four as the visitors hit an impressive 46 without a shot at the end of the 25-ball Powerplay.

Just like in the girls game before it, the spin proved harder to hit. Jake Lintott’s first set came in just two games and he beat dangerous Salt to get the first ball long shot on his second spell.

Buttler quickly became the aggressor, lifting Stoinis and Lintott to great maximum.

The top scorer in this year’s IPL hit 32 balls in half a century shortly after Wayne Madsen brilliantly overtook it with Stoinis’ precise throw.

Russell’s comrades soon joined in the carnage. The almighty player bet Fuller six balls in the middle of the game before he and Buttler maxed out the unfortunate Garton in a dizzying partnership with 51 out of 25 deliveries.

Buttler’s dismissal of Hogan has failed to stem the flow of races for a depleted Brave attack, without the service of England stars Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills and Craig Overton.

Russell then became overwhelmed when the Originals wiped out the previous best team’s score in the Men’s Hundred at the Ageas Bowl, scoring the men’s fourth-highest score in the entire competition.

Garton abandonment of Russell recapitulated a tough night on the pitch for Brave before the West Indies star beat the club 24 in the final set to lift the Originals to a total always looking beyond the home team.

Hero of the match: Andre Russell (64 from 23 balls, including 5 six-balls).

Russell says: “I felt confident with the cane but the runs didn’t come and I [kept] trust. Today the coach said to me, “Today is your day”, and I said, “Well, let’s hope for the best”. And today [I] really came out and I did what I did best. So happy for another win, I hope that we can keep the momentum from now on.

“My strength is really growing and hoping to take on the role of filming but when I [saw] how big is the spinning ball, [how they were] let the ball fly away from me – I said to the captain, ‘Do your best’. If we could have some boundaries [great]but my real goal is to stay here till the end.

“How I maximized it, you know, thinking about the last 20 and trying to take advantage of bowling and and we really [got] higher than par, I’m actually thinking about 161-165 based on wicket play but with strength and continuous hitting the boundary, we [got] 180 puts a lot of pressure on them. “
