Alex Davies and Ross Whiteley kept Southern Brave’s hopes faint in defending their Hundred title as they significantly beat the Trent Rockets to second by six shots with five spare balls.

Story of the match

Brave looked down and looked out when it needed 75 from 36 balls, but Davies hit 51 unbeaten and Whiteley added 30 to reduce the Rockets’ chances of going straight to the final.

Dawid Malan scored the previous highest with 59 for the Rockets, as the visitors finished with a lower score of 138 for six.

Brave have now won three games but have to hope other results go their way for a chance at next Friday’s Qualifiers at home.

The Hundred: Southern Brave vs Trent Rockets

Southern Brave 142-4 lost 95 balls – Davies (51 of 43 not out), Whiteley (30 of 21); Cook (2-25 from 20 balls)
Trent Rockets: 138-6 in 100 tackles – Malan (59 shots 41), Patel (21 shots 15); Hogan (2-20 from 15 balls)

The Brave were under immediate pressure in their chase as Sam Cook beat Paul Stirling without scoring before captain James Vince took the first ball with a burning Luke Wood.

Their first-place beaters, who looked confident against the Welsh Fire on Monday, finished the power match 15 to two.

Even Tabraiz Shamsi dropping Quinton de Kock outright didn’t change the momentum as the forced rate increased.

De Kock quickly got the race back on track with a much-needed max, followed by a vicious drag for four. But he left shortly after, confusing Rockets captain Lewis Gregory in the forward position.

Davies stabilized rounds with his new partner Whiteley to keep Brave’s hopes of survival alive before speeding up, thanks to the indiscipline from the Rockets’ bowlers.

A combination of hitting big, wide and no ball suddenly made Brave the favorite, only for Whiteley to drop with 16 still claimed. However, Tim David found form again at the perfect time, bringing two six-year-olds home.

Before that, Malan and Alex Hales seemed to have no difficulty in the first two sets of speed from Michael Hogan, 41, and 19-year-old opening teammate Sonny Baker, but that all changed when spinner Stirling joined the attack. .

After hitting the Irish star’s first ball over the backstop, Hales sent his second serve straight to cover to let Stirl hit his first hit in The Hundred.

Stirling bowling 10 balls unchanged, conceding only six times, as the Rockets finished the 25-ball power play with a lower score than 27 for one.

Spin continued to do the trick for Brave as Jake Lintott let Tom Kohler-Cadmore be brilliantly saved by James Fuller for an extended period of time.

Only Malan looked comfortable in the first half, but partner Samit Patel soon caught on to his pace, unleashing Lintott for six straight seconds before Baker was denied a first hit by Hundred when Hogan defeated Malan in the 37th minute.

The tournament’s top scorer skipped that dangerous moment to reach his half-century from 38 balls, shortly after Fuller produced the perfect player to beat Patel at the age of 21.

Hogan then made amends by bowling Malan just as the English hitter looked down.

Innings stalled before Lintott’s final set came on at 18, punctuated by a daring back sweep that won six from New Zealand smasher Colin Munro.

Munro overcame Fuller in the penultimate set before Hogan eliminated Gregory as the Rockets finished with 138 to six, a seemingly lower total that ultimately proved just within Brave’s reach.

Hero of the Match – Davies (51 out of 43 balls didn’t come out)

After his second 50 in Hundred, Davies praised his teammates’ work in their final home game.

“It’s not going to go down in history as one of the best innings I’ve ever played, but I just have to take the boys over the line and do what needs to be done,” he said.

“Ross and Tim should be here with me, I could have worn this medal but without their hits we wouldn’t have won.

“We weren’t great at home, we let them [the crowd] A fair bit down but the mark of this team is that we will fight to the end of the competition. “

What’s next?

Next in The Hundred is a brace between the Welsh Fire and Northern Superchargers in Cardiff on Friday, with the hosts looking for their first win in both the women’s and men’s events.

The Superchargers are currently on the outside looking in when it comes to qualifying for the knockouts. The women’s team is currently fifth with two wins from four, while the men’s team is one place behind in sixth place after four losses from their first six.
