“The heavy division needs him.”
Former unified cruiser world champion and one-time heavyweight champion David Haye says Deontay Wilder is integral to boxing’s greatest weight class.
Wilder has been out of the ring since his conclusion lose directly to Tyson Fury in October 2021and ‘The Hayemaker’ is yearning to return. Tell Fight Hub TVHaye insisted that he wanted to see ‘Bronze Bomber’ go up against everything.
“We need big characters, big boxers, big personalities – that’s what Heavy Boxing needs. It misses him since he left. There are a lot of these young warriors who have overcome. Joyce, Dubois, Hrgović – so many names from around the world. Let’s mix it up. Let’s make it busy. “
Of Wilder’s 42 wins, 41 of them came by knockout – usually a devastating right-hand style. He has three Top boxing champion Knockout of the Year Award and can be proud that he brought home a title from heavyweight for America after the longest period of time in the country without one.
Despite his accomplishments, the freshest memories of Wilder in the minds of fighting fans will be his trio with current WBC Champion, Tyson Fury. Haye spoke about those fights, praising the challenge the Americans presented to the ‘King of Gypsy’.
“He’s a great fighter, a great character.
“I just watched three fights with the number one heavyweight on the planet, Tyson Fury. He’s probably the closest to defeating him. He almost knocked him down on a couple of occasions, he got him badly hurt.”
The British are well qualified to speak of the strength of Deontay Wilder. In fact, it was training camp for his own fight with Fury in 2013 (later canceled) that he brought in the young heavyweight from Alabama.
Haye may not have to wait too long for Wilder’s return. 36 year old manager Shelly Finkel, recently told The Sun that his boxer was training in Las Vegas, with Robert Helenius in the mix of potential competitors. Add to that a photo in the gym with Badou Jack who is now a weight cruiser and it looks like we’ll see the ‘Copper Bomber’ step over the rope in the not too distant future.
