The Game Awards: From God Of War Ragnarok to Stray, our picks to win on gaming’s Oscars night | Science & Tech News

The best night in gaming – the closest the industry has to its own Oscars ceremony – is upon us.

Live from Los Angeles in just a few days, The Game Awards will celebrate the best the medium has to offer this year, celebrating everything from the biggest blockbusters to indie hits. The smallest is released.

Game reporter Martin Kimber and Technology reporter Tom Acres here with their advice on some of the most competitive categories – and you can keep scrolling to see the full list of nominees.

Best game

The Story of the Plague: Requiem
Elen’s ring
God of War Ragnarok
Forbidden Horizon
lost
Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Martin’s Pick: Horizon Forbidden West

It’s hard to make a successful sequel, but Guerrilla Games has done it. You’ll struggle to find a nicer game with a larger, wider map. It offers great replayability and is therefore great value for money, it’s addictive and did I mention it’s beautiful? Plus, robot dinosaurs! What’s not to like?!

Tom’s Choice: Get Lost

Pretty debut from French indie studio BlueTwelve Studio. This surprisingly touching dark adventure paints a bleak but hopeful picture of the fragility of life and how it is. Not content with nuanced comments about capitalism and its impact on the planet, you also play as a very cute cat. And there is a meow button!

Martin’s Pick: Horizon Forbidden West

In the first Horizon, it seems that the developers came up with the concept of robotic dinosaurs and built the entire game around that idea. However, this sequel boasts a much more interesting story that appeals to even players who just want to take on a mechanized velociraptor with a bow and arrow.

Tom’s Choice: God of War Ragnarok

The reimagining of God Of War four years ago was a triumph, taking vengeful protagonist Kratos out of his Greek comfort zone and into Norse mythology – with a son, nothing more than nothing. least. The Stranger in a Strange Land is inherently less novel this time around, but his transformation from one of the most two-minded people in gaming to a touching and relatable depiction of fatherhood. I’m getting stronger and stronger, with a rather touching return.

Martin’s Choice: God Of War Ragnarok

I recently played this with some friends who really couldn’t tell the difference between the cinematography and the gameplay. If you basically want a playable Pixar violent movie, this is the game for you.

Tom’s Pick: Elden Ring

FromSoftware’s games have always prided themselves on a huge art direction, and each game brings its dark, fantasy trends to a larger audience. Elden Ring is a collaboration with Game Of Thrones creator George RR Martin, expressed through the sheer scope and detail of its world. There’s an almost unimaginable level of diversity, with every corner you turn always offering something new. The best art or not, it certainly has the most.

Best family game

Kirby and the Forgotten Land
LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga
Mario + Rabbids Ray of Hope
Nintendo Switch Sports
Splatoon 3

Martin’s picks: Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga

If I could give this game all of the above awards, I would. It’s been so long since they released one of these, I was worried they’d mess up the perfect recipe – but they didn’t. Collectible characters, stud multipliers, and fun cinematics will all return. Must play for all family members (and Star Wars nerds).

Tom’s Pick: Nintendo Switch Sports

I didn’t realize how much I missed the thrill of home competition in Wii Sports until its spiritual successor arrived on Nintendo’s Switch console. As was the case with the original, your mileage with each sport will vary and tennis and bowling are by far the best, but each is enhanced by much more precise motion control and more online players.

The best multiplayer game

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II
MultiVersus
precaution 2
Splatoon 3
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

Martin’s Choice: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Boy, this game is tough. It is very difficult to bloom. I haven’t died this much in a game since… well, never. However, the new multiplayer maps are well designed, the gunplay is satisfying and balanced, and it’s fast. Infinity Ward has taken a long time to perfect the FPS formula, and they have done it.

Tom’s Pick: Splatoon 3

Infinity Ward may have perfected the FPS formula, but Nintendo has a monopoly on futuristic paintballs. Splatoon 3 is a lot more similar, with an emphasis on more stuff. While the fast-paced matches and tight controls are familiar to anyone who’s played the previous installments, the enhanced map selection, modes, and weapons make it a worthy entry. worth in the series is still unlike anything else nearly six years after its debut.
