Depending on how you look at it, The Last of Us Part I could be either a remake or a very involved remake. Either way, it’s plenty of improvements over the base game. While I don’t much care For Part I, if you want to check it out for yourself, here are some of the biggest changes you can expect.

Accessibility options

Part I of The Last of Us comes with Naughty Dog’s full set of accessibility options. And that is commendable. This comes in the form of fully customizable controls, a range of visual aids, options to reduce motion sickness, help with navigating levels, options for the hearing impaired or hearing loss and combat accessibility. Within each bar are dozens of sliders and switchable options, allowing players to fully customize the game experience, hopefully allowing as many people as possible to enjoy the game in the best way for them. .

It looks unbelievable

Part I is undeniably better looking than the original The Last of Us. Like, it’s not even a contest. There has been debate around the image, with a lot of people saying, “I can’t even tell the difference!” I don’t know if these people are lying to themselves or those around them, but the visual updates make Part I look as good as any other PS5 three-A game and certainly not like a PlayStation 3 game. Although, like me wrote in my featurethe increase in fidelity highlights all other areas where The Last of Us has aged poorly.

However, there is a novelty to seeing that the levels and environments that have been etched in my memory for the past nine years look better than ever; The lush, bright greens of nature that are renovating cities, neighborhoods, and the buildings in them always look great, and so do the character models and cutscenes. The faces are more expressive, most of the PlayStation 3’s awkward stiffness is gone, and overall, most scenes feel more believable and natural.

Enemy AI is smarter

Overall, I have mixed feelings about combat, but the smarter AI is one of the places where My Part shines. The enhanced AI is at its best when running across and around you, forcing you to think – and then act – quickly. In almost every gunfight, at least one enemy will throw a wrench into my plan, causing me to quickly adapt. This often leads to tense moments and alleviates some of the lesser parts of combat – such as a simple cat and mouse stealth or stopping the cover ‘n’ shooter.

Left behind

All right, look at this. This isn’t necessarily new as it was also packaged with the 2014 remake, but let me quickly point out the Left Behind side. First released as a small DLC now bundled here with Part I – with all the extra improvements – this two-hour long Ellie-focused chapter is one of the highlights of the entire pack. . With Ellie and her budding love of friend Riley at the center, I found the short chapter impactful and moving – more than I’ve done the 10-plus hour walking tour as Joel. . Actor Ashley Johnson’s performance ages amazingly and is the best part of the original game and this re-release.

While I’m at it, My Part also comes with Base: Our Final Creation, a nearly two-hour behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of the original game. While it’s an official PlayStation movie and almost certainly doesn’t go into the actual development of the game, it’s still pretty good and shows a lot of footage of the levels in development, the stages. characters and motion capture sessions.
