It’s a small EV startup that will only deliver a handful of cars by 2022, but it’s still a big deal for the entire auto industry. That’s because Fisker isn’t really Building the car—it’s made by the auto parts giant
International Magna
(MGA). This is one of the first EVs built by production contract—but it won’t be the last.
Having a third party is not unheard of in the car business. Magna built cars to other automakers, but the vehicles that automakers choose to outsource are often lower-volume, niche-market cars. Automakers have always had their own assembly capacity, but Fisker never seemed to want to own an auto assembly plant.
