The Bizarre World of Post Trauma is a Return to PSX Survival Horror

Last night at Game AwardRaw Fury and developer Red Soul Games have released a new look at the indie horror genre Post-traumatic. The paranormal game leans heavily on the PSX generation of survival horror, with fixed camera angles and even optional tank controls. The developers describe it as “both a tribute and a modern take on classic horror games.”

Post Trauma follows Roman, a middle-aged train driver, as he becomes trapped in the scary and claustrophobic world we see in the trailer. Everything looks surreal, whether it’s endlessly stacked computer screens or weird, fleshy tentacles sticking out of the concrete. While the trailer features some third-person footage, these can be used for dramatic effect as the developers have confirmed that Post-Trauma has fixed the camera angles.

We also get glimpses of exploration and puzzle-solving, as Roman can be seen changing dials on a clock wall and fleeing a dark hallway. Post Trauma’s Steam page recommends playing the game with a notepad, so I’m excited to see how deep these puzzles go if I need to scribble notes like a madman. If you squint more closely, you can spot haunting shadows in the background, hinting at some of the threats in the game you’ll face. The trailer also shows the most succinct look at a dingy safe room, complete with a tape recording your progress. The appropriate classic tool.

This isn’t our first look at Post Trauma, as the game has been in quiet development for some time before Raw Fury’s involvement. In fact, the game that previously had a Steam demo isn’t currently available – although if you want an extended look at Post Trauma, footage from that demo is available online. Minimal combat, morphing environments and – my favorite in the survival horror genre – third-person commentary for items are all on display. There is currently no launch window for Post Trauma, but you can add the game to your wish list Steam right away.
