The best wrench set 2022 | Auto Express

Besides the socket set, the wrench is the heart of a car toolkit for anyone who wants to do more than raise the fluid level. While screwdrivers and pliers buy for home use can double on a car you will need to invest in a wrench for automotive work and a metric combiner is the best place to start for most drivers .

Older British cars may require a national base size, most commonly AF, but a metric that provides opening and ring dimensions will allow for a wide range of repair and maintenance work.

So, which set makes us turn our heads? We are busy in the workshop with eight collections to learn.

How did we test them?

With the help of Draper Quality Assurance, we checked both ends of the 10, 13 and 17mm wrench for size. We then used Draper’s test rig to apply the torque required to the DIN899 standard, plus 20% to simulate misuse for both the 13 and 17mm open and ring ends. We also checked the dimensions for any distortion after testing.

Without using specialized equipment, we tested for comfort, length, and looked for clear size markings, carrying cases or brackets, plus the inclusion of eight, 10, 12 wrenches, Our essential 13, 17 and 19mm. The final factor to be considered is the price from online sources at the time of writing.

The result was tight across the field, but the Halfords narrowly got the win in the Clarke PRO20 set. For drivers on a tight budget, the cost-effective Silverline kit completes the podium.

This set of Halfords offers a high-quality feel from the moment you slide your finger into the foam tray. There’s plenty of room to remove each tool and finding what you want is easy, because the sizes are marked on the tray, designed to fit in the tool cabinet.

The edges are a bit more comfortable than rival wrenches and the finish feels good. It passed our tests, with only one slightly oversized opening over 10mm to complain about. Not the cheapest, but the best combination of price and quality.

Recommended Back to the podium for the PRO20, the product also took second place in our most recent test, in 2015. The price may have gone up by more than 10ners since then, but a lot still hasn’t. change. The wrenches are more comfortable than most tested competitors and are considerably heavier.

This kit has screened through our tests with no problems and is the kit to choose if there are a lot of small screws on your vehicle, as sizes start at 6mm. But just like last time, the shelf doesn’t cling to the tools, which is annoying. It’s almost over, but Halfords just made a judgment on the price.

Recommended If your tool budget is dwindling by the day this is a great option available for under £15. The finish doesn’t match the pricier and more instrumental rivals here, but this set will totally do the job.

It passed our sizing and torque tests with no issues, which isn’t true of every kit here. You have to ask why the dimensions are only on one side of each tool, but they show up on the shelf and for this price you can live with it.

Sealey Premier AK63255 16 piece combination cutlery set

A top performer in previous wrench set tests, this time Sealey just missed the podium. This set has a lot going for it, with ranges starting at 6mm and going up to 22mm, all contained in an EVA foam tray (ethylene and vinyl acetate) for the tool cabinet.

But it is a pity that the finger holes on the side are small and there is no size mark on the tray, while the tool size is not visible when stored. It only tripped once in our tests, where the 17mm ring was just oversized after the torque test. A good choice if you need a larger range.

Draper is a two-time winner on this test, but has struggled to fit these sets best. Instruments are housed in a neat rack and the size markings are easily visible. These tools are great to use thanks to their smooth finish.

But the 10mm wrench was a bit oversized and the 13mm started to flex in the test using the wrong torque. While it’s still good for extra use, it doesn’t help Draper bid to win in such a tight-match field.

  • This is the most expensive set in the test, but you’ll get a lot for your money, not only for the number of tools but also for their size. All of our essentials are present, but if you work on larger vehicles, popular sizes up to 32mm are also available.

The wrenches are packaged in a neat, marked tool roll and can also be hung on the wall. These tools are great to use, but the smaller ones are like those in Draper’s 47044 set, and have the same sizing and torque testing issues, which hurt the overall score. .

It might be one of the pricier sets here, but with the Draper 29547 you’re getting a lot for your money, this time on the number of tools. They’re split between conventional and primitive, and British and metric, making them ideal if you’re working on both modern and classic cars.

They are comfortable to use and the heaviest during testing. Three wrenches (we only tested with regular sizes) are not very good and are a bit oversized. But it’s a versatile set and is ideal if you need range.

If you want a larger size without stretching to the Draper 29547 set, this collection could be an option. You will need to carefully check which sizes you need, because there are gaps in the product line. It starts at 10mm, so is the only set that doesn’t include our base 8mm size.

The smooth chrome finish means the wrenches feel good, but they have thin shaft edges, as with some of the others here. A cost-effective set for larger tools, but with size issues for 13mm, plus after torque testing for 17mm that’s a pretty big number.
