The best cooling bed sheets for hot summer nights, tested and reviewed (2024)
My Summer Sadness Stayed up all night because it was too hot. Nothing makes me more miserable than the heat, especially at night. Unfortunately, hot nights are the price I pay for skipping winter here in Southern California, but some people are just hot sleepers regardless of the temperature or where they live. Average Thermostats adversely affect the quality of your sleepthis can affect your health, so it’s important to stay cool at night; if you’re not going to splurge on a cooling mattressIt might be worth looking into cooling pads.
But what makes a good cooling pad? What exactly To be A cooling sheet? These sheets often improve airflow, allowing your body to dissipate heat better than traditional cotton sheets. Linen is a popular choice and is quite breathable, while other materials have moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties. After you’re almost done sleeping per sheet Over the weeks, I’ve concluded that linen and cotton make some of the best cooling sheets. But if you want a softer material (or hate percale like I do), there are other options, too. (All prices are for Queen size.)

What is a cooling pad?
There are a lot of terms used in the world of cooling pads and cooling mattresses. Temperature control! Air flow! Humidity! Phase change materials! Most of the time, these characteristics are related to the breathability of the bed sheet. Breathability means moisture can evaporate better, and “temperature regulation” usually means sheets are breathable enough to release heat and moisture from your body.
What makes bed sheets breathable? Cotton, linen and bamboo have excellent breathability, but not all sheets are created equal, so material alone is no guarantee. Weavingas in the one-to-one threads of percale versus the three-to-one threads of sateen and weight (including thread count) of effective bedding. Higher thread counts will be less breathable, and tighter weaves will also be less breathable. The yarn in the fabric is important, as is its degree of twist—a higher twist will give the fabric a smoother, cooler feel, while a loose twist won’t be as smooth and can trap heat.
Some companies treat bed sheets with phase change materials or PCMs, which are substances that absorb and release energy to heat or cool an area. “PCM creates a microclimate,” says Karen Leonas, a professor of textile science at the University of California. Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. Excess body heat is absorbed by these materials and then released into the body as the body cools.
These treatments can add to the cost of the cooling pad, but they are not yet widespread, and it is difficult to determine how well they will blend into the fabric. “PCM has undergone thermal cycling testing and has shown to have a long lifespan,” says Leonas. “If it is a surface treatment, there is a chance that some of the microcapsules will be lost due to abrasion.” Parima Ijaz, CEO of Pure Parima Agree and say these treatments sometimes only last a maximum of 10 washes. There are only a handful of bed linens on the market that advertise the use of PCM and our guide focuses on breathable materials and textiles rather than these treatments. According to Leonas, it’s worth noting that PCM will last longer on foam mattresses. If you’re still sweating at night after switching to a cooling pad, give it a try a cooling mattress.
