The asteroid lights up the sky over eastern Russia
A small asteroid crashed into Earth’s atmosphere and created a spectacular fireball in the sky over eastern Russia early Wednesday morning.
People from Russia’s remote Sakha republic, in northeastern Siberia, stood in the snow to observe the phenomenon, which astronomers discovered about 12 hours before it arrived.
According to ESA, the asteroid has an estimated size of about 70cm and entered Earth’s atmosphere at 01:15 local time (16:15 GMT).
Sakha’s emergency situation ministry said officials were on alert but no damage was reported after the asteroid crashed.
