Texas rookie, WR John Metchie III announces leukemia diagnosis


Houston Texans’ second-round draft pick, John Metchie III announced Sunday that he’s been diagnosed with a form of leukemia that will likely end his rookie season before it even begins. .

“I was recently diagnosed with APL (Acute Developmental Leukemia), the highest curable form of leukemia,” Metchie said in a statement released by the team. “I am currently receiving very good medical care, in good spirits and I hope to recover at a later date. As a result of this diagnosis, I may not be able to play football this season. Focus My main focus will be on my health and recovery. Thank you in advance for your support and well wishes. I can’t wait to come back stronger than ever. God bless.”

Metchie, 22, has starred at Alabama during his college career, where he hit 2,081 yards received and 14 touchdowns. He tore his ACL during the team’s 2021 SEC Championship win, but hopes to recover from surgery during training camp with the Texans.

Several notable NFL players have recovered from cancer in recent years to return to the field, including the Arizona Cardinals re-run James Conner, the San Francisco 49ers tackle attack Trent Williams and the former Captain Kansas City Eric Berry.

Metchie was one of four players selected in the Texans’ first 50 picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.
