Tesla Semi runs 500 miles into production, starts shipping to Pepsi on December 1

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter late Thursday to announce the company’s production of semi-trailers, known as Semistarted.

He also confirmed that Pepsi, which ordered 100 Class 8 trucks after its launch in 2017, will be among the first recipients. Deliveries of sales to the beverage company begin December 1. Budweiser also ordered for 40 trucks at the same time as Pepsi.

Semi production is done at Tesla’s factory in Austin, Texas. This factory is also where Tesla builds the Model Y crossover and is expected to begin production in 2023 Cybertruck.

Semi production was originally slated to begin in 2019 but this date has been pushed back as Tesla prioritized Model Y production in Austin due to limited battery availability and other supply chain issues. Since then truck manufacturers established as Daimler Trucks and Volvo Trucks launched electric trucks, including class 8 trucks.

Tesla started taking reservations for the Semi in May and began asking for a $20,000 deposit in August, at which point orders were closed. Initially, these trucks cost $150,000 for the 300-mile model and $180,000 for the 500-mile model. It is possible that the price will be increased when the reservation reopens, a situation that Affects some electric vehicles in recent months.

Tesla’s performance numbers for the Semi include 0-60 mph acceleration in 20 seconds and up to 5% on-slope acceleration. Those numbers are for the Semi’s maximum total weight of 82,000 lb. Power comes from a trio of engines.

Tesla hasn’t said how big the battery is, but the company says it can charge 70% in 30 minutes using one of the chargers designed for the Semi.

There will likely also be Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving electronic driver assistance features, although Tesla has not confirmed availability. However, the company initially said there would be some self-driving capabilities returning in the truck’s 2017 launch.
