Tesla recalls 300,000 vehicles due to taillight software glitch

Tesla is recalling more than 300,000 vehicles in the US because of a software glitch that could cause the taillights to turn off intermittently, increasing the risk of a crash.

Tesla said in the document posted Saturday by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the problem could affect one or both taillights on some Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Brake lights, backup lights and turn signals are not affected by software problemthe company said.

The automaker said it is releasing an online software update to fix the problem.

The recall covers certain Model Y SUVs between 2020 and 2023 and Model 3 sedans 2023. That equates to 321,628 vehicles.

Tesla became aware of the problem last month after receiving complaints, mainly from customers outside the United States, that their vehicle’s taillights weren’t on. The company completed an investigation into the matter earlier this month.

Owners will be notified by mail starting January 14. Company says in the documents that cars in production and those that are about to be delivered will receive the update starting November 6.

As of November 14, Tesla has received three warranty claims as a result of this incident, but is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to it, according to the documents.
