Tesla Model Y Wins Top Safety Award – Safety
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has recognized the highest level of safety – the Top Safety Pick+ award – for the Tesla Model Y. 2021-22. This award applies to Model Y manufactured after April 2021.
The midsize luxury SUV has weathered the road, earning good marks in six rigorous crash assessments. These include small overlap fronts on the driver’s side, small overlap fronts on the passenger side, moderate overlap fronts, original side panels, roof strength, and headrest tests.
But IIHS engineers demanded more for the vehicles to achieve “plus” status. For example, a vehicle must have a forward collision prevention system in place to earn an enhanced or superior rating in both vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian-to-vehicle assessments.
The Model Y did not disappoint. It boasts a standard forward collision prevention system that has earned outstanding ratings in both vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian-only tests.
But IIHS expects even more when it comes to safety. Headlights are where vehicles often miss. To achieve a Top Safety Pick+, good or acceptable headlights must be standard on all trims.
Here again, the Model Y meets strict criteria. Those are the two available headlamp systems that receive good and acceptable ratings – giving the SUV the ultimate it needs to drive with the IIHS’ highest safety award.
