Terry Francona, Phil Nevin were eliminated in the same play
We’re taking you to Cleveland on Monday night to see one of the wildest scenes of the 2022 Major League Baseball season.
Chaos ensued late into the seventh inning of the Guardians’ 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels when both managers – Cleveland’s Terry Francona and Los Angeles’ Phil Nevin – were sent off the field.
On the same play.
By the same referee (head umpire Ron Kulpa).
So what happened?
Francona was the first coach to be fired when he argued that a pitcher from Ryan Tepera, called a ball, had actually touched Cleveland’s batter Andres Gimenez. His scream resulted in a launch from Kulpa. In the end, those are pretty standard stuff and not uncommon.
But while that was going on, Tepera attempted to throw a few warm-up throws while the game was stopped, only to be told he wasn’t allowed to do it. That resulted in Nevin getting an exception and trying to protect his pitcher and getting kicked off the field as well.
Totally crazy.
