Terror police arrest man following reports of suspicious package at Leeds hospital | UK News



Terrorism police have arrested a 27-year-old man after reports of a suspicious package resulted in the partial evacuation of a hospital in Leeds.

People have been asked to avoid the entrance to St James’s Gledhow Wing, where the majority of maternity services, including the delivery room, are concentrated.

A police statement said: “Emergency services were called to a suspicious package outside the Gledhow Wing of St James’s Hospital, Beckett Street, Leeds early this morning.

“A fence was put in place as a precaution for public safety and military experts were present for the assessment according to normal procedures.

“People are asked to avoid the entrance to the Gledhow Wing at this time while the fence remains in place.

“As a safety precaution, some people have been evacuated from the vicinity.

“A 27-year-old man from Leeds has been arrested in connection with this matter.

“Due to the nature of the incident, CTP North East has deployed resources with access to experts to help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The emergency department at St James’s remains open and patients are asked to go to outpatient appointments as usual unless otherwise contacted.”
