‘Terra Nil’ Review – A Necessary But Imperfect Netflix Game – TouchArcade

When Land of Nil (Free of charge) from Devolver Digital and Free Lives were revealed, the striking premise and aesthetic caught my attention. Devolver is known for publishing interesting games, even if I don’t like every release from them, but Land of Nil looks like it could be special. Already played it on iPhone 11, iPhone 14 Plus, iPad Pro (2020) and on PC (laptop and Steam Deck) for this game Land of Nil review, it’s interesting and a bit disappointing to see how it expands across the hardware.

Land of Nil It’s a very meditation-like experience, but one that can be frustrating. Your aim is to clear the land, create forests, flowers, and basically create the best wilderness possible as you balance your resources. There is a mix of strategy and puzzle games in Land of Niland difficulty options allow you to tailor the experience to your liking. I say almost because a particular mechanism related to recycling feels counter-intuitive compared to how it plays out in the demo. It’s not fun to make me waste time digging paths and ruining the beautiful green setup I have. After the initial disappointment passed, I better planned my next attempt in Land of Nil. There’s definitely a zen feel to playing it, but resource management and some decisions in the later stages can turn off some.

With procedurally generated levels, there’s a lot of replay value, but some people may feel the game unfolds pretty quickly. When clicking on the core game loop, you’ll come back to it for a while even after the first six hours you spend seeing what it has to offer. While the visuals are stunning and I hope we get a real release featuring the art books alongside the inevitable Switch version, Land of Nil shines with its sound design. I definitely recommend playing it with a nice pair of headphones for music and sound effects.

After sampling the initial demo, I am sure it will control well on mobile devices. The last game got almost everything right. There are some things that are not intuitive. They require small touch targets on other menus. The UI scale option is useful, but even setting it to the highest is not enough to fix two specific buttons. Overall, the team did a great job with the touch controls for Land of Nil on mobile.

In its current state, I was facing the same glitch on three different saves across devices. This involves the scanning process and the stage you need to recycle. In one case I got around it by force closing the game and reloading, but others required a complete rework of the stage or map. Except for that, I also noticed my iOS and iPadOS devices playing very warm Land of Nil. It doesn’t even run at 60fps or offers a high resolution option and the battery drain needs to be addressed in a future update. Currently no sync progress even though I used the same Netflix user and profile on two devices.

On the Steam Deck, I had a much better experience with Land of Nil when it comes to visuals and performance, but I prefer the look and feel on the iPad. It feels perfect for a large touchscreen. It’s worth noting that the game doesn’t have official Steam Deck support yet, and I’ve been using a community layout that works pretty well. There is proper touch support on the Steam Deck like the iOS version as of this writing. The PC version supports higher frame rates, even up to 120 fps, but it barely kept it on the Steam Deck when it landed. It runs better on my laptop, but I wish the iOS version offered a 60fps option.

Visually, it’s disappointing that Land of Nil downgraded pretty much on my two iOS devices. This is very noticeable on my iPad Pro (2020) going into later recovery stages. On iPhone 14 Plus, Land of Nil looks and runs a lot better. I don’t know if it runs at 60fps on any mobile device, but it’s not even the same as the three I’ve used. The aesthetic and artistic direction are gorgeous, and I like the look, but the technical downgrade still leads to battery drain Land of Nil back to being great on iOS.

Land of Nil Available now for $24.99 on Steam This and available to Netflix subscribers on iOS This and Android This. If there is no problem, Land of Nil will be worth more than the asking price as long as you know what you’re getting. If you’re not sure and have a Netflix subscription, I suggest you try the game to see if you click on it.

Land of Nil It’s not worth subscribing to Netflix to play, and I don’t think a game exists to promote that, but it’s a must for anyone who’s already subscribed. This is exactly the kind of game I’d like to see Netflix publish on mobile. I just hope the current issues can be resolved soon in the updates. I love this concept, and Land of Nil Just a few patches away from becoming one of the best games Devolver Digital has released.

In the current state, Land of Nil was great, but it was plagued by some bugs and glitches that kept me replaying specific parts of the level. It certainly has a solid foundation and I’m looking forward to playing and shutting it down in the weeks and months to come once the patches come out. I was impressed with the concept and visuals in the reveal and demo, but I’m happy to see Land of Nil actually deliver in the final release. This is definitely a necessity if you have a Netflix subscription despite the issues I had.
